It’s the question we hear almost every week: « Should we go to Merzouga or Zagora? » Both trips start in Marrakech, both cross the Atlas mountains, and both end with a night under the stars. But they are not the same experience, and the right choice depends less on the desert than on you: how much time you have, how you feel about long drives, and what picture you have in your head when you think of « the Sahara ».
Here is the honest version, the one we give our own friends.
The short answer
If you have 3 days or more and you dream of tall golden dunes, go to Merzouga. If you only have 2 days and you mostly want the feeling of the desert, a camel ride and a night in a camp, Zagora is a good, easier option.
| Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | Zagora | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | About 560 km | About 360 km |
| Ideal length | 3 days / 2 nights | 2 days / 1 night |
| The dunes | High sand dunes, the classic Sahara picture | Smaller dunes, more stony desert |
| Driving time | Long, split over 2 days | Around 7 hours each way |
| Best for | First real Sahara experience, photographers | Short stays, families with young kids |
Merzouga: the Sahara of the postcards
When people imagine the Sahara, they usually imagine Erg Chebbi: a sea of orange sand dunes rising out of a flat, dark plain near the village of Merzouga. Some dunes reach around 150 metres, and the colours change all day, from pale gold in the morning to deep red at sunset.
The road there is part of the trip. A classic 3-day tour crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stops at the fortified village of Aït Ben Haddou, follows the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorges, then reaches the dunes on the second afternoon. You ride a camel into the erg as the light softens, have dinner in a camp, and wake up early for a sunrise you won’t forget.
The honest downside: it is a lot of driving. Day 3 is mostly the road back to Marrakech. If you get car-sick easily or have only a short holiday, keep that in mind.

Zagora: the desert in two days
Zagora sits at the end of the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves and earth-coloured villages. The trip is shorter, so you get to see a lot in 2 days: the Atlas pass, Aït Ben Haddou, the valley, then a camel ride to a camp for the night.
What you need to know before booking: the dunes near Zagora are much smaller than in Merzouga, and the landscape is more rocky desert than sand sea. Some travellers expect Erg Chebbi and feel a little disappointed. Others love it, because they wanted the atmosphere (the silence, the fire, the stars) more than the size of the dunes.

What about Erg Chigaga?
You may also read about Erg Chigaga, a large dune field beyond M’hamid, reached by 4×4 on desert tracks. It is wilder and less visited, but it needs more days and a proper off-road vehicle. If that tempts you, ask us and we will tell you honestly if it fits your schedule.
When is the best time to go?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days and pleasant evenings. In summer, the middle of the day can be extremely hot, so tours start early and rest in the afternoon. In winter, days are often sunny but nights in the desert get properly cold, sometimes close to freezing: bring a warm layer even if Marrakech felt like spring.
Five small tips that make a big difference
- Pack a small night bag. Your main luggage usually stays in the vehicle; take only what you need for the camp.
- Bring a scarf. It protects you from sun and wind, and it is the best souvenir you will buy on the way.
- Charge everything before day 2. Electricity in desert camps can be limited.
- Wear closed shoes. The sand gets very hot in summer and cold at night.
- Ask for a private tour if you can. You stop when you want, for as long as you want, and the trip goes at your pace.
So, which one is for you?
Think about the moment you are travelling for. If it is standing on top of a huge dune at sunrise, choose Merzouga and give it 3 days. If it is a quiet night in the desert without spending your whole holiday in a car, Zagora will make you happy.
